Tree Removal Newcastle

Deciding to take a tree out altogether isn’t usually a decision people make lightly. Trees take decades to grow, and most homeowners would rather keep one standing if there’s any reasonable way to do it. But sometimes removal is genuinely the right call, and knowing the difference is half of what you’re paying a proper tree surgeon for.

We carry out full tree removal across Newcastle and Northumberland, from single garden trees to larger removals on commercial and development sites. Every job is quoted honestly, with the reasoning behind the recommendation explained in plain terms, not just an invoice.

When removal is the right answer

A tree usually needs to come down entirely, rather than being pruned or reduced, when one or more of the following applies:

The tree is dead, dying, or has significant internal decay that reduction won’t fix. A tree with advanced fungal infection or a hollowed trunk is a structural risk regardless of how much weight you take off the crown.

It’s growing too close to a building’s foundations, drains, or a boundary wall, and the risk only gets worse as the tree matures. It’s leaning noticeably, especially after storms, or has recently dropped large limbs without warning. It’s on a development site where the tree sits directly in the footprint of new construction. Or it’s simply the wrong species in the wrong place: a fast-growing Leylandii planted three feet from a house thirty years ago rarely ends well for either the tree or the wall.

If none of that applies, we’ll usually recommend a crown reduction or other pruning work instead, since it’s cheaper, keeps the tree, and often solves the actual problem (light, overhang, size) without losing everything the tree provides. We’d rather tell you that than take a tree down that didn’t need to come down.

    How we approach a removal

Every removal starts with an on-site assessment. We look at the tree’s condition, its lean, the ground it’s growing in, and what’s around it: fences, sheds, greenhouses, power lines, neighbouring gardens, the street. That tells us whether the tree can be felled in one piece or needs to come down in sections.

For trees with open space to fall into, a directional felling cut is often the quickest and most cost-effective method. For anything close to buildings, boundaries, or overhead cables, which covers a lot of Newcastle’s older, tighter gardens in areas like Heaton, Jesmond, and Byker, we’ll section the tree down piece by piece using rigging and controlled lowering, rather than risk any part of it landing where it shouldn’t. You can read more about this on our tree felling and sectional dismantling page.

Once the tree’s down, we clear the timber and brash from site as standard. If you’d like logs or woodchip left for firewood or mulch rather than taken away, just let us know, we’re always happy to leave material behind rather than cart it off if it’s useful to you.

Stump grinding is a separate job from removal itself (different equipment, different visit in most cases), so we’ll quote that alongside the removal if you want the stump gone too, or leave it if you’re happy for it to stay.

Checking for protection before we start

Before any removal, we check whether the tree carries a Tree Preservation Order or sits within a conservation area. A huge amount of Newcastle’s older housing stock, particularly around Gosforth, Jesmond, and the West End, falls within conservation areas, and it’s genuinely common for homeowners to have no idea a tree in their own garden is protected.

If a TPO applies, removal without consent is a criminal offence with fines that can run into five figures in a magistrates’ court, and higher still in the Crown Court. If the tree’s in a conservation area without a TPO, we still need to give the council six weeks’ written notice before removing anything over 75mm trunk diameter, measured at 1.5 metres up. We handle this process for you as part of the job where it’s needed, so you’re not left trying to work out planning law on your own.

The exception is genuine emergencies: a dangerous tree posing immediate risk doesn’t have to wait six weeks, and we’ll advise you on the right emergency procedure if that’s the situation you’re in.

  4. 04

    Access and neighbouring properties

A lot of Newcastle’s gardens, particularly in the older terraced streets around Heaton, Byker, and parts of Gateshead, have limited access: a narrow side passage, no vehicle access to the back garden, or a tree that overhangs a neighbour’s boundary. We factor all of this in when quoting. Where a job needs access through or over a neighbouring property, we’ll talk you through what needs agreeing in advance, rather than turning up and discovering it on the day.

For larger removals on more open sites, further out towards Ponteland, Morpeth, or the Northumberland countryside, access is usually more straightforward, and we can often bring in larger machinery to speed the job up and reduce cost.

  5. 05

    What it costs

Tree removal pricing depends on the size and species of the tree, how accessible the site is, whether it needs sectional dismantling, and whether you want the stump ground out and the waste cleared. We give every customer a clear, itemised quote before work starts, agreed in full, so there are no surprises on the invoice. If, once we’re on site, the job turns out to be more involved than expected, for example decay we couldn’t see from ground level, we’ll talk you through it before doing anything extra, not after.

FAQs

Is it cheaper to reduce a tree than remove it entirely?
Usually, yes, and if reduction genuinely solves your problem we’ll say so rather than push for the bigger job.
Do you deal with the stump as well?
We can, either as part of the same visit or a separate one. Stump grinding is priced and scheduled separately since it’s a different piece of equipment.
What happens to the wood?
By default we clear it from site. If you’d like logs, mulch, or woodchip left behind, tell us before the job starts and we’ll sort it.
How quickly can you remove a tree?
For routine removals we’ll usually book you in within a week or two depending on season. For anything dangerous or storm-damaged, we offer same-day and emergency callouts.
